How to send messages with the main Facebook app, no Messenger required

Another method is to make use of a brand new tweak known as FBNoNeedMessenger, though it requires a jailbroken iOS device. With this tweak, users can view and reply to messages directly from the Facebook app without requiring them to install the messenger app. It works just like before, simply launch the Facebook app and tap on the Messages tab to start chatting with your friends. One of the cool thing about this tweak is that all the chat features previously present on the Facebook app such as 'Chat Heads' will also be added.

Once you install the tweak, no configurations are required. Simply launch the Facebook app and you're good to go. As of now, the tweak also works with the latest version of the Facebook app. To remain on the safe side, make sure not to update the app in the future unless the tweak is updated to support the latest version.

FBNoNeedMessenger is available for free in Cydia and is compatible with Facebook version 13.1.

Use Paper for Facebook

You don't even have to be Facebook friends first

Facebook Messenger is one of the most popular messaging platforms in the world, and it's a great free tool to get in touch with people quickly.

Despite its popularity, adding people to Messenger can be confusing, especially someone who isn't already a Facebook friend.

Luckily, there are five different ways to add anyone to Messenger.

The information here applies to Messenger on iOS and Android devices. We've indicated when there are differences.

You're Already Friends on Facebook

Facebook friends are automatically added to the Messenger app when you sign in to Messenger with your Facebook account login details. To start a conversation with a Facebook friend in Messenger:

From the Chats screen, tap the Compose Message icon on the top right. (This is shown as a square with a pencil in iOS apps and a pencil in the Android app.)

Type or select a contact's name.

Type your message in the text at the bottom.

Tap the Send icon.

You're Not Facebook Friends, But They Use Messenger

If you're not already friends on Facebook but you both use Messenger, exchange username links so you can communicate on Messenger. To send your username link:

Open Messenger and tap your profile picture in the top left corner of the screen.

Scroll down to find your username link.

Tap your username link and then tap Share Link from the list of options that appears.

Select how you want to share your username link (text, email, etc.) and send it to the person you want to add on Messenger.

When your recipient clicks on your username link, their Messenger app will open with your user listing and they can add you immediately.

The recipient would then tap Add on Messenger and you will receive a connection request to add them back.

They're Stored in Your Device's Contacts

Sync your mobile contacts with Messenger to communicate with them in the app. To do this, turn on Contact Uploading in Messenger.

From Chats, tap your profile picture in the top left corner.

Tap People.

Tap Upload Contacts to turn on continuous uploading of your mobile contacts.

If you turn off Upload Contacts, the contacts you've uploaded to Messenger will automatically be deleted

You Know Their Phone Number

If you prefer not to sync your contacts with Messenger, or you have someone's phone number written down, but they are not stored in your device's contacts, add them to Messenger with their phone number.

The person must confirm their phone number in Messenger for you to be able to add them as a contact via their phone number.

From Chats, tap the People icon in the bottom menu.

Tap the Add People icon in the top right of the screen.

Tap the Add button (plus sign).

When prompted, select Enter Phone Number.

Enter their phone number and tap Save. You'll be shown the corresponding Messenger user listing if Messenger detects one from the phone number you entered.

Tap Add on Messenger to add them.

Meet Up in Person

If you're with someone and you want to add each other on Messenger, use any of the above options or take advantage of Messenger's user code feature (Messenger's version of a QR code), which makes adding people in person quick and painless.

Open Messenger and tap your profile picture in the top left corner.

Your user code is represented by the unique blue lines and dots that encircle your profile picture.

Have your friend open Messenger and navigate to the People tab.

Have your friend tap the Add icon (plus sign) in the top right followed by the Scan Code button.

They might need to configure their device settings to give Messenger permission to access the camera.

Have your friend hold their camera over your device with your user code open to automatically scan it and add you to Messenger. You'll receive a connection request to add them back.

Rate limits are in place to prevent malicious behavior and poor user experiences.

The unsend feature is also available if user use Messenger right from the Facebook's website. In that case, instead of pressing and holding the message, you have to click on the More icon (three-dots) visible next to the message and select Remove.

Again you will be asked if you want to remove for everyone or remove for you. I guess you it very well with what option you have to go with.

The feature is also available when using Messenger via Facebook's website. Instead of long-pressing on a sent message, click on the three-dot icon next to the message, followed by Remove. A prompt will show up, asking if you want to remove for just you or everyone.

You can chat with other Facebook users that aren't on your friends list as well after accepting access to the message. In the beginning, when Messenger was just Facebook chat, text chat was the only available way of chatting, and you could send pictures as well. Now, when tapping on the text box, you can add pictures from the camera roll, take pictures directly from the app using your device's camera, add gifs, send money, and have access to a number of different apps that you can use with the person that you're chatting with. You can share your location for 60 minute increments, play Facebook games, and set reminders.

Besides text chatting, you're able to record voice messages and send the recorded message to chats that you're having with other friends. There's a voice to text option as well if your friend can't listen to the message out loud. If you have a Pinterest account you can link it and send pins, or articles from well-known publishers like the Wall Street Journal. Like a message by tapping the thumbs up, or send emojis, stickers, and GIFs. Add more friends and create a group chat so everyone can join in on the fun at the same time.

Video chatting and calling are the most popular updates to the messenger. As long as you have internet access you can call a friend. Tapping on the phone icon opens up the call screen. You can do a regular voice call and toggle on the camera to turn on the video function. Access the text box while in the call by clicking on the text bubble, mute the microphone by clicking on the mic icon, and you can reverse the camera view from front facing to standard view. Take screenshots in the call that will save to your mobile device or tablet's camera roll. Now not only can you have text group chats, but you can have group voice and video calls too.

As for customization, you can change the color of the icons and the text bubbles. When you send messages, the color that you select shows up in your friend's chat as well. You can view friends' stories at the top of the app, sending messages and emojis for each clip, and you can add to your own story as well.

On an Android, Messenger takes up about 120 MB of storage while running. As you chat with more people and use more functions like sharing videos, pictures, and outside articles, the space that the app takes up begins to swell and after prolonged use, the app can sometimes shut down randomly. The app also drains the battery very quickly if you're using it for even a few different chats.

Where can you run the program?

Messenger is available for PCs, mobile devices and tablets running Windows, Mac, iOS and Android mobile devices and tablets. On PC, you can access Facebook Messenger through the Facebook website, with pop-out text boxes appearing when messages are sent. There is also a separate Messenger website if you wanted to have a separate tab for your chats, voice and video calls. All of the functions available for Messenger on Android are available on the web versions. On iOS when voice or video chatting, you can pick from a number of effects that hang and float all over the screen.

Is there a better alternative?

For Android, the best alternative is Messages, the Android function that comes with your phone. It has all of the functions that regular text messaging apps come with, but of course there isn't a way to contact Facebook friends unless you have their phone number. The next alternative would be Whatsapp. Text, voice, and video chatting is good across the board, and just like Messenger you need to have some sort of internet or data connection to use it. Other similar functions to Messenger are photo and video sharing capabilities, GIFs and stickers, voice messages, voice to text, and group chatting. With Whatsapp, you can display statuses, and view your chats on your desktop. Just go to the Whatsapp site for web and scan the QR code with your phone. You're instantly able to view all of the chats that you have on your phone on your desktop or laptop.

Our take

Facebook Messenger for Android is a lot of fun to have. It is absolutely packed with functions that make chatting delightful and kicks it up a notch in the messaging app department. There aren't many other apps with this many capabilities available for free for most mobile devices.

Should you download it?

Yes, Facebook Messenger is a useful app, but bear in mind that it drains battery power very quickly, and asks for a lot of personal information in order to download it. When it was first released, users were essentially forced to download it in order to chat with Facebook friends on a mobile device. If you're a user that utilizes a lot of functions often like video or voice chatting, sharing documents, photos, and videos, and you don't mind charging your phone more often, Messenger is worth having on your phone. Otherwise, the messaging application that comes with your phone or Whatsapp should meet your needs just fine.

You can message more than one person at a time on Facebook. Doing so creates a new conversation among all the people you message. Everyone can see and reply to the message. So if you send a message to Mike, Jenny, and Steve, a new conversation is created. When you're looking at that conversation, you can see all the messages that have been sent by all the people involved.

Much like the individual conversation, you can read this exchange from top to bottom, with the most recent message appearing at the bottom of the page. You can scroll up to read earlier messages.

Below the most recent message is a box for replying. The main thing to remember about group conversations is that you cannot reply individually to members of the conversation. When you reply, all members of the conversation see your reply.

You can see who said what by looking at the names and profile pictures identifying each message. Each message is separated and has a timestamp so you can see when it was sent. At the top of the page, just like with a one-on-one conversation, is the New Message button, the Actions button with a drop-down list, and a Search button for searching through the content of the conversation.

Along with options to mark messages as unread, forward messages, archive messages, delete messages, report spam, and move to the Other Inbox, the Actions drop-down list for group conversations offers a few more options not included for individual conversations:

Create Group: If you find yourself talking with the same set of people all the time, you may want to create a group for a richer set of options for sharing. Groups make it easier to share and talk about things like links and documents.

Add People: If you feel that someone has been left out of the conversation, or if you suddenly realize he should be part of the conversation, choose this option to add him. You're asked to enter the name(s) or e-mail(s) of the person you want to add. The person added can see the entire conversation history, even though he wasn't added until the middle of the conversation.

Leave Conversation: If a conversation isn't interesting to you anymore, choose this option to leave it. If you do leave a conversation, the other people on the thread will see a small notice that you have left.

Facebook Messenger just got takebacks. A long-promised option to delete messages inside Messenger begins rolling out on Tuesday, February 5, the company said. The update allows users to unsend a message up to 10 minutes after sending that message, for both individual and group chats.

Facebook promised the unsend feature after an investigative report revealed that CEO and creator Mark Zuckerberg deleted some of his own sent messages. Following the report, Facebook said that they would bring the option to unsend a message to all users.

The tool can help retract typos, messages sent to the wrong person and other errors, if they are caught in time. Of course, unsend doesn't mean unseen, but the quickest unsends might not be seen on the other side of the conversation.

Messenger previously allowed users to delete messages so they wouldn't see them in their own feed, but the recipient could still see the message. Now the delete option includes "remove for everyone" as well as the choice to "remove for you" if you don't want to see the message but don't mind everyone else still having access.

So how do you take back something you just sent on Messenger? Tapping and holding the message will bring up both that emoji response window, as well as options at the bottom of the screen to copy, forward or remove the message. Tap remove and, if the message was sent less than 10 minutes ago, choose the remove for everyone option from the menu.

Taking back a message isn't going to go unnoticed, however. Facebook says the other users in the conversation will get a text alert saying that a comment was removed. A placeholder noting that a message was removed will also be stuck in the portion of the conversation where the message was eliminated from. Users can still report messages after they've been removed.

Messenger needs to be updated before the feature is available, however. Facebook says that the update is beginning to roll out worldwide on both iOS and Android apps. The update started a slow rollout to some countries at the end of last year.

While the feature was prompted in part by the report indicating Zuckerberg deleted old messages, the new tool is a bit different from what sparked the update in the first place. In a statement from Facebook, the company said that the messages were deleted with a tool to limit "the retention period" for security reasons. The new tool, however, doesn't ditch old messages but allows users to retract the newest messages.

Desktops and smartphones are very capable. There's often debate on how effective a smartphone can be and if it can replace a desktop in dire need. That said, there is still a problem when it comes to working across different platforms. If you own an iPhone and a Mac, you can easily sync your clipboard. If you own an iPhone but prefer Windows 10 for your desktop, you cannot sync your clipboard.

Often, when these limitations impede work, users resort to crude alternatives. One easy way to send text from your clipboard across devices is to message them to yourself. Not a lot messaging apps let you do that but you can send messages to yourself via Facebook Messenger.

You can send messages to yourself from Facebook Messenger web and from its apps. The process is simple, and the same.

On Facebook Messenger web, click the new message button at the top right of the column on the left. In the To field, type in your own name. Your profile will be listed at the top along with a list of all groups that you're a part of. Select your own profile and send a text message or an image.

On the smartphone app, tap the new message button at the top right. Again, type in your own name and select your profile. Send a text message or an image from your camera roll.

Web apps are often used to work with different platforms. Some platforms are purposefully kept closed and for this reason, other platforms are unable to freely communicate with them.

There is also a matter of security. While it would be convenient for any phone and any desktop to be able to communicate with each other, it may also be a security risk for devices to be so open. This is why certain impediments must be placed to hinder communication that is too open.

Lastly, convenience and hardware are also an issue. You can, for example easily copy images from an iPhone or an Android phone on a Windows 10 desktop but you do need to connect them via a cable. Android phones don't all use the same type of cable, and users may not always have the cable on hand. Apps like the Photos app on Windows 10 and its companion app for iOS and Android make up for this but it's only for photos and not for items copied to the clipboard.

Speaking of Messenger Lite, the chat app by Facebook is available in many countries including US, UK, Canada, and India. In regions where it isn't available, Android users can simply download the app's APK and sideload it. On the other hand, you won't find Messenger Lite for iPhone and iPad. Though iOS users will still receive any files sent to them from Messenger for Android.

Today at Facebook's developer conference , F8, the social network announced new ways to share via Messenger. The company built a sharing platform that lets outside apps share their content, such as videos, music and GIFs, through the Messenger apps, available for Android , Windows Phone and iOS. You'll be able to share with apps on iOS and Android, but it's unclear when this will be available on Windows Phone.

One of the first apps to take advantage of this is Ditty, which launches today and sends custom musical messages. You type in a message, pick a song, and the app sings your message to the tune of the song you chose.

JibJab, a GIF messaging app, is also partnering with Facebook to share through Messenger. Other apps that are using the sharing platform at launch are The Weather Channel, Fotor, Giphy, Bitmoji and ESPN, plus many more. For a full list, check out Facebook's developer site. Below, I'll give you a primer of how to use the new sharing features, available starting today.

Get sharing

First, you'll need to have one of the eligible apps installed on your phone. You can either just go straight to Google Play or the App Store, or you can check out the list of apps in Messenger. Just open a conversation and tap the More button on the menu bar (which looks like three dots) to see the list. Then you can tap any of the apps to hop over to your phone's app store to download it.

Once the app is installed, there are a few ways to share. I'll use Ditty as my example, but the process will be nearly identical with other apps.

Option one: Open a conversation in Messenger, and select Ditty from the menu bar toward the bottom of the screen. It's the same place where you can select stickers, emoji, photos and voice recordings to share in a conversation.

Ditty will automatically open, and you can create a new message by following the prompts on the screen. When you're done, tap the Messenger button to share your message, which will take you right back to your conversation. The message from Ditty will appear in line in the chat, where your recipient can view it just like any other message in Messenger.

Option two: Open Ditty and create a message. When you're done, tap the Messenger button, which will open that app. Pick one or more people to share your message with, and Messenger will send it to those people, either in an existing chat (if available) or a new one.

Option three: If someone has sent you a shared message in a chat, and you have the same app installed, you can simply tap the reply button in the chat to send a message back. You can see this example above.

This is the first time that Facebook is letting you share media from other apps into Messenger, and the process is seamless overall. In most cases, you'll need to tap the screen only once to share something to your Facebook chats. Facebook expects more apps to take advantage of this, so you may soon be able to share much more in a message than before.

How to know if someone blocked you on Messenger

When you use the Messenger app on your phone or in a browser on your desktop, you are probably familiar with the status icons next to the messages you send. There are four:

1. An unfilled, empty circle means the message has not been sent. This is typically because you don't have any internet access when you try to send a message.

2. An unfilled icon with a check mark means the message has been sent but not delivered to the recipient.

3. An icon that's filled in means the message has been delivered.

4. An icon that's filled with your recipient's profile picture means it has been read.

As long as the recipient is logged into Facebook, your message should be delivered within a few moments, which means you'll see the icon's filled-in version. Of course, it might not be read for a while (your recipient needs to open Messenger and view the message thread).

If you send a message to someone and the message is not delivered, it generally means one of two things:

• The user has not logged into Facebook
• The user has blocked you on Messenger

It's not always possible to tell the difference, but if you see that the recipient has posted to his or her Facebook page or comments on other people's posts, that implies he or she is logged into Facebook. If your message remains undelivered, you are probably blocked.

Facebook announced it was testing encrypted self-destructing messages for its Messenger platform. The feature has begun to roll out to users. It's called 'Secret' messages and requires both the sender and recipient to have an updated Messenger app to send and receive them. The interface is more or less the same as that of regular messages and you have access to emoji, stickers, and photos on your device. What differs slightly is how the message is sent. Here's how to send secret messages in Facebook Messenger.

Open the Messenger app and tap the compose new message button at the top right. On the 'New Message' screen, tap 'Secret' at the top right. The first time you send a Secret message, Messenger will alert you that the message you're sending is going to be encrypted from one device to the other. Simply tap 'Ok' on this screen to continue.

Select a contact to send the secret message to. If your contact doesn't have the latest version of Messenger, they will not be able to read your message. Unfortunately the Messenger app doesn't tell you if the contact you selected will be able to see your message or not. It's best to check with your friend before you send the message.

Once you've selected the friend you want to send the message to, enter you message. By default, the messages are not set to self-destruct. To send a self-destructing message, tap the little timer button just above the thumbs up emoji. Select how long the message will remain visible, and then send it. You can set a self-destructing timer for ten seconds or one whole day.

When you have self-destruct enabled, all messages in the thread are set to self-destruct in that same time period. When it expires, neither you nor your friend can ever see those messages again. You can turn it Off any time but that will not retrieve the messages that have already expired. Each self-destructing message has timer that counts down time left until it self-destructs.

When you receive a secret message, the alert/notification you get on your phone doesn't tell you who it is from. It simply says 'Someone sent you a message'.

Secret and self-destructing messages can still be reported but the time frame they can be reported in is smaller than that of regular messages. Secret messages exist as a separate conversation thread from regular conversation threads. They appear on the Home tab in Messenger.

If you do not see the option to send a secret message, make sure the Messenger app on your phone is up to date. If it is up to date and you still do not see it, the feature has not rolled out to your region just yet. Give it a little time. Secret messages cannot be sent from the Messenger web app at present.
